Planning Software |
There are a number of software based solutions available to automate the development and maintenance of business continuity and disaster recovery plans. These solutions tend to involve the completion of questionnaires and templates, with the information provided being used to create the plan(s). The solutions vary in the extent of their functionality, the vendor support available and price. Advantages The main advantages of software solutions are: -
- A large number of plans can be produced and maintained relatively quickly compared with manual methods
- All plans use a standard format to produce a uniform look and feel
Disadvantages The main disadvantages tend to relate to cost i.e.
- The software licence cost
- The cost of staff training in how to use the software
The software may also be unable to be tailored to take account of any specific and/or corporate standards you may have relating to document content, layout, font etc. Microsoft Office An approach adopted by many organisations is to use Microsoft Word to develop and maintain their plans and, optionally, to include appropriate diagrams using Microsoft Visio. This approach gives the immediate benefit of eliminating the software licensing and training costs although this cost saving has to be offset against the extra time taken to manually create the plans.
